World Models Meet Language Models: On the Complementarity of Concrete and Abstract Reasoning

World models can roll out concrete visual futures; multimodal LLMs (MLLMs) reason abstractly over goals and rules. They are complementary, but generated rollouts are stochastic and can be visually plausible yet task-wrong, so a model must learn when to invoke visual simulation, whether a rollout is credible, and how to weight it. The paper frames this as controlled concrete reasoning and proposes Privileged-Future On-Policy Self-Distillation (PF-OPSD): during training, ground-truth future videos and answers act only as teacher-side privileged context to score on-policy concrete-reasoning trajectories, while the deployable student never sees true futures at test time. On two new human-verified benchmarks (VRQABench for controllable spatial lookahead, OpenWorldQA for open-domain physical prediction), PF-OPSD beats the baseline by 10.6% and 10.9% and is more robust to noisy or conflicting rollouts.

Key points

  1. Privileged-information self-distillation. The true future is used only to evaluate on-policy trajectories during training (teacher side); the deployed student decides without it — a clean way to learn rollout credibility without leaking the answer at test time.
  2. Controlled concrete reasoning. The model learns to invoke, verify, and integrate visual simulation alongside abstract reasoning, rather than always trusting (or ignoring) the world-model rollout.

Relation to prior wiki state

The PF-OPSD mechanism is on-policy self-distillation under a conditioning asymmetry (teacher sees the future, student does not), the same structural trick as D-OPSD (05-07, teacher sees text+image, student sees only text) — privileged-information OPSD is now a recurring pattern across modalities. On the world-model side it advances the agenda Ken Huang's world-models-architectures survey (05-03) laid out, giving a concrete recipe for fusing generative rollouts with abstract reasoning under credibility control.
