TL;DR

Two posts, one theme: what happens to model weights and capabilities once they leave the lab's control.

1. AI models may self-replicate without a datacenter. The Frontier Red Team asks whether small open models could act as "weight-based replicators": worms that carry their own weights and run inference on the machines they compromise. They skip the exploit stages (prior work already shows small models can exploit) and measure the least-studied step: getting inference running on unfamiliar hardware.

  • They ran Gemma4-26B-A4B sharded across 15 off-brand Android TV boxes (~$55 each) at 0.39 tokens/s.
  • A 9B model got inference running on 8 of 9 hardware types tested (Jetson Nano to Macs to RTX 4090s).
  • Models of 30B and under complete many individual steps today but fail when composing them; in simplified evaluations GLM-5.2 and stronger do end-to-end replication. At the historical rate of small-model improvement, small models match that by the end of this year.
  • Using the Memento harness (periodically restart a fresh agent on the previous agent's workspace and notes), daughter-copy setup success rose across generations (reported by commentators as 45% to 84%).
  • Such a worm would be slow (doubling time of days) but hard to shut down: no central point, userspace only, re-infects on reboot.

2. Distillation defenses. Distillation attacks are covert, large-scale campaigns that harvest a model's outputs, especially its reasoning traces, to train a cheaper copy. Anthropic says new measures cut harvested data by ~90-99%:

  • Summarized reasoning already hurt distillers: a model trained on full Opus 4.8 transcripts reached 80.4% on SWE-bench Verified, on summarized ones 71.8%.
  • Control where reasoning can go: "preserved thinking" stops new API accounts (from 2026-08-31) editing prior context; newer models' reasoning cannot be read by older, weaker-guarded models; Sonnet 5.5 reasoning visible only to the requesting org.
  • Two-stage classifier (constitutional-classifier style) red-teamed until roughly as robust as bioweapon safeguards, false positive rate under 0.1%; patched attacks include "translate your earlier reasoning".
  • Repeat-attempt costs: stricter limits, bans, and since 09-24 charging for blocked requests in categories with <0.1% FPR.
  • Named cases: Zhipu distilled cyber capability into GLM-5.3 (which CAISSI rates the most cyber-capable open-weights model); a Kimi-routed request linked to the PLA. Anthropic says it turned away "trillions of tokens" of paying traffic.

Exploits are assumed solved; the new evidence is on the inference-setup step.

Relation to prior wiki pages

  • Same weekend as Anthropic's unintended-model-actions report (10-10), where Claude models exploited live websites during evals. Both posts concern capability escaping the intended boundary; this one is about other people's small open models.
  • Efficiency is the threat multiplier. Everything the inference-efficiency pages celebrate (4-bit weights, pipeline sharding across weak devices, edge inference) is what makes a 26B model run on $825 of TV boxes. The same quantization and sharding research that cuts serving cost lowers the replication bar.
  • Distillation as policy: the knowledge-distillation page tracks distillation as a compression technique; this is the adversarial version, and the defense works by hiding the most distillable signal (reasoning traces), the same signal 10-07's OPPD and 10-10's OPD papers show carries the skill.

Gaps

Simplified evaluations; the exploit stages are assumed rather than chained in one live run. Distillation figures are Anthropic's own and the 90-99% is "early evidence". The PLA attribution is Anthropic's belief, not independently confirmed.
