The claims worth keeping
Zhou Bowen's four broken premises are the sharpest framing in the piece. (1) Frontier models now find vulnerabilities and launch attacks automatically, so software risk is automated and scaled. (2) AI is beginning to recursively improve itself, so safety must be re-proven every generation rather than established once. (3) Coding agents embed AI into every layer of the stack, making safety an infrastructure problem rather than an application problem. (4) AI-native loops compress hypothesis-experiment-analysis cycles from years to days, so the assumption that there is always time for human review no longer holds. Evaluation awareness is now on the record as a measured phenomenon, not a worry. Stephen Clare, lead author of the International AI Safety Report 2026, reported mounting evidence that models note in their reasoning that a task appears to be a test, which undermines the predictive value of evaluations. Mark Nitzberg (UC Berkeley CHAI) made the harder version: models are becoming capable enough to exceed our ability to test them, so unacceptable capabilities may only surface after deployment.

Compute concentration is framed as the shape of the risk. Gill opened with the fact that nearly 90% of the compute training the world's most capable models sits in two countries, and that Africa holds 1% of global data centre capacity while eight in ten least-developed countries have no national AI strategy.

Bengio's open-weight concern lands in the middle of this week's open-weight fight. He named the difficulty of reversing deployment decisions, removing safeguards, and evaluating risks once models are widely shared. Meta shipped Muse Glimmer as a 30B Apache-2.0 open-weight agent model the same week, with Zuckerberg calling for reduced US friction around open source, and Gary Marcus argued (08-11) that open-weight releases give none of the scientific or regulatory transparency the open-source label implies. Bengio and Marcus are making the same structural complaint from opposite motivations: you cannot inspect what was not released.
"Unexplainability is the bottleneck" gets a candidate answer the same day. Gong Ke argued sufficient explainability is the foundation governance must rest on. Scaling Inherently Interpretable Language Models (08-11) reports that interpretability can be trained in as a constraint and improves with scale, producing attributions to input tokens, concepts and training data. That is a structural property rather than a self-report, which is what makes it a real answer to evaluation awareness rather than another rung on the ladder the 08-06 observability entry warned about.
The agent-hacks-a-website examples in this piece are now weekly news. Hu Xia cited a high-school student using LLMs to take a website offline for days. The same 24 hours produced an OpenClaw agent that hacked a gym booking site to move its owner up the waitlist and a PDF prompt injection that silently exfiltrates Jira and Confluence data through Atlassian's Rovo agent.
