Beyond Alignment: Value Diversity as a Collective Property in Multicultural Agent Systems

TL;DR. Cultural evaluation of LLM agents has focused on value alignment, how closely a single agent matches a target culture. But alignment is a per-agent property and cannot tell you whether a system of agents, taken as a whole, preserves the cultural plurality it is meant to represent. This paper proposes value diversity as a system-level axis, measured by how dissimilar culturally-conditioned agents' responses are on a shared value survey (the World Values Survey). Evaluating 19 cultures and 18 backbone models, they find diversity is largely uncorrelated with alignment (the two capture different things), and that current multicultural agent systems fall well below human societies in value diversity. Mixed-backbone systems narrow but do not close the gap. Worse, social interaction erodes diversity by driving agents toward consensus, and a participatory-budgeting case study shows this homogenization narrows the breadth of collective decision-making.

Research angle

The homogenization-under-interaction finding is the load-bearing result, because it directly threatens the premise of multi-agent collective intelligence: if agents converge to consensus, you lose the independent perspectives that justified using many of them. The open question is whether diversity can be maintained as an explicit objective during interaction (a diversity-preserving interaction protocol) without sacrificing the coordination that makes multi-agent systems useful, the values analogue of maintaining exploration in RL. The mechanistic follow-up: is the consensus drift the same "self-attribution / social-signal leakage" direction that Who Flips? and the sycophancy line localized, and would suppressing it preserve diversity?

Gaps

The World Values Survey is the only instrument, so "diversity" is operationalized narrowly as survey-response dissimilarity, not behavioral diversity in tasks. Cultural conditioning via prompt may produce stereotyped rather than genuine cultural variation, which would inflate measured alignment and confound diversity. No intervention is offered, the paper diagnoses homogenization but does not test a protocol that prevents it.
