TL;DR

This paper takes the human sleep analogy literally as a continual-learning recipe. The problem it names: today's LLMs do in-context learning well but cannot continually transfer that temporary in-context knowledge into their long-term parameters. The "Sleep" paradigm has two offline stages. (1) Memory Consolidation via Knowledge Seeding is an upward distillation: the memories of a smaller-self are distilled into a larger network to add capacity while preserving knowledge, implemented as a Generalized Distillation that combines on-policy distillation with RL-based imitation learning. (2) Dreaming is a self-improvement phase where the model uses RL to generate a curriculum of synthetic data to rehearse new knowledge and refine existing capabilities with no human supervision. Experiments on long-horizon, continual-learning, knowledge-incorporation, and few-shot generalization tasks support the value of the sleep stage.

Key findings / claims

  1. Knowledge Seeding is upward distillation. Unlike standard distillation (large teacher → small student), Sleep distills a smaller self into a larger network to grow capacity while preserving prior knowledge — a capacity-expansion move, not a compression move.
  2. Generalized Distillation = OPD + RL imitation. The consolidation step is explicitly framed as combining on-policy distillation with RL-based imitation learning, putting it inside the wiki's OPD literature.
  3. Dreaming generates its own curriculum. A self-improvement RL phase produces synthetic rehearsal data without human supervision, the continual-learning analogue of self-play.
  4. Gains on continual / long-horizon tasks. The sleep stage helps on long-horizon, continual-learning, knowledge-incorporation, and few-shot generalization tasks.

Relation to prior wiki state

The headline is a naming collision worth flagging: two arxiv papers eight days apart both titled "Language Models Need Sleep," both about offline consolidation, with genuinely different mechanisms. The 05-27 paper consolidates evicted KV context into SSM fast weights via N learned recurrent passes — an inference-time, architecture-level memory move. This 06-03 paper consolidates in-context experience into long-term parameters via upward distillation plus RL dreaming — a training-time, capability-level move. The convergence on the sleep metaphor across two teams in one window is itself the signal: offline consolidation as a first-class phase is now a recognized gap, attacked at two different layers of the stack.

The Knowledge-Seeding step plugs into the knowledge distillation page. Its "Generalized Distillation = OPD + RL imitation" framing rhymes with CoPD (05-01, parallel RLVR experts mutually distilling) and with the DRIFT/GFT line that RL and weighted SFT are the same objective. The Dreaming phase (RL-generated synthetic curriculum, no human supervision) sits beside SCOPE (06-01, data-free self-play) and G-Zero (05-12, verifier-free self-improvement). The upward (small→large) distillation direction is the unusual part: most of the wiki's distillation entries compress downward.

Research angle

  1. Does upward distillation avoid the interference today's other papers diagnose? Local Perturbation Theory and MERIT (both 06-03) show multi-domain consolidation interferes in a low-dim conflict subspace. Whether Knowledge Seeding's capacity expansion sidesteps that, or just relocates it, is a concrete test.
  2. Sleep-trigger and dream-curriculum control. Like the 05-27 paper's open question on a learned sleep-trigger policy, the dreaming curriculum here is a candidate for a learned controller rather than a fixed schedule.
  3. Stability of RL imitation in consolidation. The OPD-plus-RL consolidation is exactly the regime today's TrOPD shows is unstable under distribution mismatch; whether Sleep needs a trust region is untested.
