TL;DR
Artiles et al. argue that LLMs can sample research directions that are internally coherent (theoretically sound, logically structured) yet remain "cognitively unavailable" to human researchers because the space of phrasings, methodological combinations, and analogical bridges humans actually consider is a small subset of the coherent space. The paper proposes sampling procedures to push generation into that alien subspace and measures whether the resulting directions are evaluated as plausible by independent expert raters.
Why this matters
This is a different framing of the AI-for-science discussion. Most prior work asks whether LLMs can replicate or extend human research directions. Artiles et al. ask whether LLMs can systematically generate research directions humans would never propose, regardless of those directions' merit. If the answer is yes and the resulting directions are non-trivially good, the bottleneck on automated research stops being capability and becomes "how do humans triage outputs we did not generate."

- Define a measure of "human-conventional research-direction space" via embedding clusters from existing arxiv corpora.
- Sample candidate directions from an LLM under varying conditions designed to push generation away from the convention centroids (temperature schedules, persona conditioning, analogy injection, contrast-with-existing prompts).
- Score sampled directions on (a) internal coherence via LLM rubric and (b) external plausibility via human researcher rating.
- Examine the geography of the alien subspace: which kinds of moves (cross-domain analogy, methodological recombination, abandoning standard assumptions) reliably push generation off the human-convention manifold.

- The space of coherent research directions LLMs can generate is materially larger than the space humans actually propose, even within familiar domains.
- Naive sampling (high temperature, large N) does not reach the alien subspace, it just resamples convention with noise.

Open questions
- The proposed direction's plausibility is rated by human experts, but a direction that is "cognitively unavailable" may also be a direction those same experts cannot evaluate. The evaluation problem is part of the problem.
- The paper's date (2026-03, arxiv 2603.01092) places it ~2 months ago, but it only just surfaced on r/MLScaling now. The publication lag suggests this work is gaining traction post-hoc as autoresearch infrastructure matures. Worth watching whether it gets cited in upcoming autoresearch papers.
