WorldKV: Training-Free World Memory via KV Chunk Retrieval and Compression

TL;DR

Autoregressive video diffusion models can generate real-time action-conditioned worlds, but sustaining a persistent world, where revisiting a previously seen viewpoint yields consistent content, is an open problem. Full-KV-cache attention preserves consistency but grows linearly with rollout length, breaking real-time constraints. Sliding-window inference restores throughput but discards long-term consistency. WorldKV is a training-free framework with two components: World Retrieval stores evicted KV-cache chunks in GPU/CPU memory and selectively retrieves scene-relevant chunks via camera/action correspondence, inserting them back into the native attention window without re-encoding. World Compression prunes redundant tokens within each chunk via key-key similarity to an anchor frame, halving per-chunk storage to fit 2x more history under a fixed budget. On Matrix-Game-2.0 and LingBot-World-Fast, WorldKV matches or exceeds full-KV memory fidelity at roughly 2x the throughput, and is competitive with memory-trained baselines without any fine-tuning.

Why this matters

WorldKV applies the KV-cache-as-retrievable-memory idea to video world models. The training-free aspect is the key practical contribution. Existing approaches to persistent world generation either retrain with explicit memory architectures (expensive) or accept consistency loss (degrades the user-facing experience). WorldKV says: keep the existing model, store evicted chunks, retrieve them when the camera/action signal suggests they're relevant.

This is a Tier 1 inference-efficiency contribution because:

  1. KV-cache-as-retrieval-memory is a generalizable pattern. The same idea (compress + store + retrieve based on a query-side correspondence signal) applies to long-context LLM agents that revisit topics, to multi-document RAG systems, to agentic memory architectures. The video setting is just the cleanest test case.

  2. The compression-by-anchor-similarity trick may transfer. Pruning within-chunk tokens by similarity to an anchor frame achieves 2x storage compression. The equivalent for language would be pruning intra-chunk tokens by similarity to the chunk's first or most salient sentence.

  3. Camera/action correspondence as the retrieval cue. Most retrieval systems use vector similarity as the retrieval cue. WorldKV uses an explicit semantic signal (camera pose, action) which is cheaper and more reliable in the video setting. The equivalent for language might be using explicit metadata (timestamp, speaker, topic tag) instead of embedding similarity.

Connection to today's KV trio

WorldKV completes a four-paper KV cache theme on HuggingFace today. Together they show that the inference-efficiency community has converged on KV cache as the central bottleneck and is attacking it from multiple angles simultaneously:

Paper Approach Setting
KVServe Adaptive compression for network transfer Disaggregated LLM serving
RTPurbo Sparse attention transfer with 16-dim indexer Long-context LLM
Gated DeltaNet-2 Replace KV cache with channel-wise-gated recurrent state Linear-attention LLM architecture
WorldKV Training-free KV chunk retrieval + compression Video diffusion world models

Four papers, one bottleneck, four different attack vectors. This is the strongest single-day signal in May 2026 that KV cache has become the field's central efficiency problem.

Numbers

  • Matches or exceeds full-KV memory fidelity at roughly 2x throughput.
  • World Compression halves per-chunk storage, fitting 2x more history under a fixed budget.
  • Competitive with memory-trained baselines without any fine-tuning.

Open questions

  • Does the camera/action correspondence retrieval cue generalize to language agents that have implicit (not explicit) semantic structure?
  • How robust is the anchor-frame compression to scene transitions, where the anchor becomes a poor compression target?
  • What happens when the retrieved chunk has a substantially different style or context than the current rollout? Is there a re-encoding cost for stylistic alignment?

Industrial implication

For video-generation product teams (Pika, Runway, Sora, Veo), this is an immediate deployment lever. For LLM agent teams, the architectural pattern (retrieve evicted chunks back into native attention without re-encoding) is the more durable contribution.
