ScientistOne: Chain-of-Evidence for Verifiable Autonomous Research

TL;DR
Autonomous research agents now produce competitive solutions and professional-looking manuscripts, but the manuscripts contain failures that surface-level evaluation cannot detect: fabricated citations, unreproducible scores, and method descriptions that diverge from the implementation. ScientistOne ties every claim to its evidence source through three contributions. Chain-of-Evidence (CoE) is the verifiability framework that requires each claim to be traceable. ScientistOne itself is the end-to-end research system that maintains those evidence chains by construction during literature review, solution discovery, and writing. CoE Audit is the post-hoc audit (score verification, specification violation, reference verification, method-code alignment) that applies uniformly to any system. Over 75 papers from five systems and five frontier research tasks, every baseline shows at least one systematic failure: up to 21% hallucinated references, score verification passes on as few as 42% of papers, and method-code alignment between 20 and 80%. ScientistOne hits zero hallucinated references (0/337), perfect score verification (12/12), the highest method-code alignment (14/15), and matches or beats human experts across all five tasks while generalizing to six more spanning medical imaging, fine-grained recognition, 3D perception, and language modeling.

Research angle
CoE Audit's 26%-larger catch rate over LLM-as-judge is the operational result that should travel. If audits with deterministic checks consistently catch failures that judge models miss, the assumption that LLM-as-judge is a viable proxy for verification is wrong for any high-stakes domain. The downstream implication is that production research-agent platforms should bind to executable verifiers (code-run, citation-fetch, score-reproduce) rather than to model-based scorers.
